all of this

I want to be a private detective
a folk singer
burlesque bon ton
the coat room girl of a magnificent hotel
a champion roller skater of the USA
a land surveyor
someone who arranges flowers
matchmaker
bread baker
a girl who steals hearts
picks pockets
shines shoes
my mother said even as a child
I would make up stories
pace around the room
and worry about
how many things I could be
before 100 years old kills you dead
wring my little hands
and ask her how big the world
really was

I made her stretch out her arms
& that was the whole wild world
