I should have known

by amy sharp

when I stretch out in the comfortable places in my life
nestle in
move my body towards a sun that licks me
seeking simple
not difficult
nothing grows
not one blade of grass
through a crack In the sidewalk
nothing comes to light

I have to start punching.
Jab.
Look out.

I have to ask you a few times before you pay attention.
Will our demons play well together?

And you nod your head.
