The Interpretation of her

by amy sharp

I do all the right things in my dreams. I'm backwards. Under sleep I'm the best person you ever did know and there are fresh cut flowers and the whole place smells like soup and it's right and we all dance.  But in the real world I make a mess and wreck the pretty things and we just shrug our shoulders and in the car I turn all the music up. I'm pretty sure I'll go deaf soon.
And my friend says that people unleash in dreams. There are symbols. There are motifs. I pull my sleeve up and show her that I write those things on my arm. That I carry them around. Up here in the awake. Right up here.
