a poem a day for a year #51

by Amy Turn Sharp

I was the lucky drive thru winner

at Tim Horton's the other day

they bought my order

small donut holes and large coffees with milk

kindness random or something

the man mumbled missing many teeth

but earnest with his wink

I was urged to pay it forward

as you do he said

and he winked again

so later I gave one dollar to a man on the bus

he took it

but he was afraid of me

and I tried to use writing workshop prompts in real life

I whispered

across the antipasto bar

at the market

to a stranger

tell one person what you really want

see what happens

I said to the stranger

and just like a movie

she opened up her red mouth

smoothed her hair and said

love

I want love

and pushed her silver cart away

from me
